Eric Boerwinkle received his Ph.D. degree in 1985 from the first-ever Department of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan. The following year he joined the Human Genetics Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, as an assistant professor. He rose through the ranks at that institution and in 1997 obtained the rank of full professor. Dr. Boerwinkle is an internationally-recognized expert on the genetics of common chronic disease, especially cardiovascular disease.

Lundy Braun is a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Africana Studies at Brown University and a member of the Faculty Committee on Science and Technology Studies. She received her PhD from Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1982. Her current research focuses on the history of race and science, the contemporary debate over genomics, and asbestos-related diseases in South Africa.

Vivian Ota Wang is a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Agency Representative of the National Science and Technology Council of the Executive Office of the President to the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office and a Program Director of the Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications Research Program of the National Human Genome Research Institute. Prior to joining NIH, she held tenure-track faculty positions at Rutgers, Arizona State, and Vanderbilt universities where her research program focused on race and racial identity related to genetics, health and education.
